Leak Checks

Keep you and your family safe by learning how and what to do if you suspect a propane leak, as well as how to prevent them.

Safety Check

Propane is safe when stored and handled properly. But it can be dangerous if there is a leak. You need a leak check whenever there is an interruption of service, such as when we install a new tank, when you run out of gas, or if you suspect there is a leak. A leak check will determine if there are any leaks within the piping system and help keep you and your family safe.

To keep from running out of gas, make sure you check your gauge often and call for delivery if your meter is at 30% or below. Or sign up for our Automatic Delivery so you never have to worry about running out.

Propane Odor

Propane is actually odorless, but manufacturers add the distinctive “rotten egg” smell so that you can detect a leak right away. A propane leak can cause carbon monoxide poisoning, so make sure you know what to do if you detect that smell. Propane detectors can be bought as an extra safety measure to detect leaks, especially if there are members of the household who have a diminished sense of smell.

If You Smell a Leak

  • Leave the area immediately. Evacuate everyone from the home or building.
  • If it is safe to do so, shut off the gas.
  • Make sure to put out any open flames. A spark could start a fire or explosion.
  • Report the leak by calling your propane supply company and 911, while keeping a safe distance away.
  • Do not re-enter the home or building until it is safe to do so.
  • Get your system checked and schedule a propane tank inspection.
